Personal Project: Family
PROJECT TYPE : Personal Photo Project
FOCUS : Food Photography & Storytelling
This project was a tribute to my late grandparents, Evelyn and Richard Banman, and the memories rooted in their German Mennonite farmhouse. The centerpiece was zwieback, a staple at their table, surrounded by the details that made their home feel like home—aged cheddar left out until it hardened, the smell of bacon in the morning, cookies in the mudroom, and sweet tea in jelly jars.
A handmade toothpick holder by my grandfather and a table runner embroidered by my grandmother added personal touches. The image was styled in the aesthetic of Dutch Old Master still life paintings, blending rich tones and soft light to evoke a sense of warmth, history, and the quiet beauty of tradition.
About my personal photo project:
This series was part of a personal challenge to expand my food and product photography portfolio. For each session, I chose a theme and explored how to translate it by playing with composition, light, and storytelling. As a creative exercise, rather than a commissioned project, it gave me the freedom to experiment and refine my approach.
